Big Happenings in the Life of Our Church

Horizon Banner

The next four weeks will be significant in shaping the future of our church.  For almost two years now six of us have been involved in a training program provided by the North Texas Conference called the Small Church Initiative (“SCI”). We have read books, participated in group workshops, and done research into the history of our church and community.  Finally we are ready to move to the next stage, which will involve our whole church family.

Thursday, April 30, is the day when all of us will get to meet with the Church Consultant and SCI Team.   All through the day they will meet individually with various church leaders.   Then everyone in the church will get to talk with the SCI Team during dinner at 6:00 p.m. and participate in an all church workshop which will begin at 7:00 p.m.  Please plan on coming to this important gathering.  You do not have to bring anything for the dinner or the workshop except for an eagerness to learn how to shape our church for God’s future.

After having interviewed the church leaders and meeting with us during the workshop, the consultant will prepare a set of recommendations tailored specifically for Good Shepherd UMC. They call these recommendations “prescriptions.”  We will receive these “prescriptions” from the consultant on Sunday, May 3rd. Then on Tuesday, May 12th, we will have an All Church Town Hall at 7:00 p.m. where everyone can discuss the merits and/or disadvantages of the prescriptions.

All of this is leading up to a decision on Sunday, May 17th. Our District Superintendent, Dr. Ron Henderson, will be preaching in the Worship Service and will conduct a Charge Conference immediately afterwards.  This vote will have a long-term impact on what our church is like for future generations.  I do hope you will take advantage of these opportunities to learn about the prescriptions and to have a voice in shaping our future.  I know you care deeply about Good Shepherd UMC.  Now is the time to translate your love into action.

In the middle of all these important considerations is an equally important time to have fun at our Community Fun Day

on the church grounds from 3:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 2nd.  Free Food, Music and Games will be provided, you just need to bring your family, friends, and lawn chairs.

See you there!
